If you're old enough to remember Woolworths, you already know something about Alan. He started his career there as a manager, then moved into sales with Nestlé — travelling Scotland, learning to sell not through pressure or patter, but by understanding what people actually needed. He was good at it.
Then came the chapter that most Scots of a certain age will smile at.
Remember Garvies? Those glass bottles of juice the guy used to pick up in the van? Alan ran that business with his business partner Ronnie Garvie. Good times. But supermarkets selling plastic bottles for pennies meant they had to sell up.
Instead, he retrained. He studied for his CeMAP, went into practice, and became the top salesman in his company. He went on to train mortgage advisors. Then he went further — earning the FCA's specialist lifetime mortgage qualification that the vast majority of advisors in the UK simply don't hold. Three decades on, Alan is one of the most qualified mortgage advisors in Scotland. Semi-retired now, working with clients he chooses. No office, no targets.
Alan has never once sold a product he didn't believe in. His entire career has been built on one simple principle: he doesn't get paid unless he saves you money or solves your problem. That's how he's always worked. That's how he still works.
Away from the desk, Alan has spent years exploring the world on his Harley Davidson — the kind of riding that takes you well off the tourist trail. He had a real passion for speedway racing when he was younger, and has spent time in more recent years passing it on — helping train his grandsons to race competitively under the Millar Racing banner, with the boys going on to ride for Edinburgh Monarchs. Those who know Alan outside of work describe the same quality that defines him at work: he does things properly, or not at all.
